A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance
John Calvin is known, of course, as the great Reformer, but his gifts as an expository preacher are often overlooked. If that’s the case with you, then what better place to be introduced to Calvin’s sermons than his sermons on Isaiah’s best-known prophecy – Isaiah 52:13–53:12.
Calvin spent three years lecturing on Isaiah to his students. This led a couple years later to his 1551 commentary on Isaiah, dedicated to Edward VI, the young king of England. At last in 1556 he began his verse-by-verse expositions of the book to his congregation in Geneva – 343 sermons in all!
This little booklet preserves his sermons on Isaiah’s famous prophecy of the suffering Servant. A wonderful introduction to Calvin for those not already acquainted with him. A treasure-resource for the preacher preparing to preach through the passage himself. And rich devotional reading for anyone.
