A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance

by Fred G. Zaspel

Few would dispute that it’s time for a new edition of a critical text of the Greek New Testament. The 2025 Textual Commentary is successor to both that of Metzger (1971, 1994) and its adapted version by Omanson (2006). Advances in scholarship continue, and this volume by Houghton helps bring the field up to date. Any careful study of the New Testament must have these tools close at hand.

The corresponding Greek New Testament: Sixth Revised Edition (Ancient Greek Edition) reflects the textual updates. The publisher sent us the Reader’s Edition which lacks the textual apparatus, so we cannot comment further on this. Immediately noticeable is the sequence of the New Testament books: the general epistles (James through Jude) follow Acts, and Hebrews falls between 2 Thessalonians and 1 Timothy – this to reflect the sequencing of the earliest Greek manuscripts.

The Reader’s Edition replaces the textual apparatus at the bottom of each page with a running Greek-English dictionary for words appearing thirty times or fewer in the New Testament (featuring contextual glosses and translations of idiomatic expressions) and parsing guide for verbs. Advanced students will of course prefer the textual apparatus, but the Reader’s edition will facilitate use for most.
