A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance
by Fred G. Zaspel
Very simply, if you have not read this book, you’re cheating yourself. I don’t know of a simpler, comprehensive introduction and overview of the New Testament presentation of the deity of Christ – The Lord of Glory – than what Warfield gives in this book.
The subtitle describes the focus of Warfield’s attention: A Study of the Designations of our Lord in the New Testament with Especial Reference to His Deity, but “designations” may not convey the scope of Warfield’s investigation. Warfield surveys the entire New Testament, highlighting virtually all the ways the inspired writers convey their recognition of Jesus as divine.
The doctrine of the deity of Christ calls for endless analysis and exposition, but is, in my view, the best place to start. Reading this book, you will have the basic exegetical ground well in view. In my opinion, this is required reading for pastors, ministerial students, and all who teach the Bible.
