A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance

by Fred G. Zaspel

Some months back I posted a brief notice of Warfield’s Lord of Glory (see here). It remains a favorite, and as I said then, this should be required reading for all who teach the Bible. It is a brief but comprehensive survey of the Christology of the New Testament writers (and of Jesus himself). There is nothing else like it. Please read it – you’ll be glad you did.

I just thought that I should mention a related volume, similar but very different. Fee’s Pauline Christology has a narrower focus than Warfield’s (concentrating on Paul’s writings), and he goes much further in depth (740 large size pages!). He first provides a brief exegetical and theological analysis of each relevant passage through the entire Pauline corpus, in order. Then (Part 2) he provides a synthesis of his findings. This too is a resource like no other.

Warfield’s is a treat to read, fast-moving and rich. Fee is more thorough but yielding fuller results. Both are the kind of works the preacher will want to keep close at hand while working through any New Testament book or passage. Both Fee and Warfield provide a reliable guide to a closer understanding of the New Testament presentation of Jesus. Important resources both.
