A Parting Gift to the Church from the Late Jean Gaffin

It is crucial to know who we are. The world loves to label us – by our gender, by our ethnicity, by our job – but as Christians our identity is not in those labels. We are ‘in Christ’. We are united to him by faith. This devotional digs into what that means, how it impacts our lives, and why it matters most who God says we are.

Each chapter looks at one facet of our identity in Christ and includes:

  • Bible reading
  • Memory verse
  • Digging Deeper section
  • Questions for self–reflection or group discussion
  • Space for personal journaling and self–reflection

About the Author:

Jean Gaffin (1936–2019), home maker and Christian school business manager, taught Bible studies and spoke at women’s conferences for many years. She was married to Richard Gaffin, Jr, with two sons and a daughter who predeceased her, and nine grandchildren.

Endorsements:

“‘Who am I?’ is one of the most important questions a person can ask. Who He Says I Am helps women understand how what Christ has done answers that very question. This Bible–centered, Christ–exalting study will help readers gain a greater understanding of how Christ transforms their identity through their union with Him.”

Christina Fox

Blogger and writer for ministries including Desiring God and The Gospel Coalition

“With biblical wisdom coupled with an endearing modesty and practicality it takes us to the heart of living the Christian life. And, truth to tell, Who He Says I Am is simply a transcript of the Christ–reflecting life Jean Gaffin herself lived, as a woman who knew where her true identity was found.”

Sinclair B. Ferguson

Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi

“Gaffin is both lively and profound as she opens up who we are in Christ. This book will make your heart sing because of union with Christ! ”

Natalie Brand

Author of ‘Prone to Wander: Grace for the Lukewarm and Apathetic’

“I never knew Jean Gaffin personally. I live thousands of miles away from her on the other side of the world, but I knew her reputation. She was a woman who loved the word of God, and she led other women in her church and elsewhere to delight in it too. This book is evidence of her love for Christ and the Scriptures. ”

Keri Folmar

“One of the hardest thing about reading this book prior to publication is that I cannot rush out and buy multiple copies for friends. But this is exactly what I will do when Jean Gaffin‘s wonderful tribute to our life in Christ — with vivid reminders of her life in Christ— arrives in print. Christian Focus has done the church a great service in presenting a book so full of Scripture, so full of doctrine, and all so accessible for readers of all ages and study groups alike. A true treasure!”

Chad Van Dixhoorn

Professor of Church History and Director of the Craig Center, Westminster Theological Seminary, Glenside, Pennsylvania

“… an accessible and insightful summary of Scriptural teaching that elevates the understanding, stirs the heart and encourages deeper study of and greater fidelity to God’s Word. Ideal for self–study, it is also an excellent guide for small groups and Bible studies. ”

Peter Lillback

President, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

“With her characteristic warmth, wisdom, and wit, Jean Gaffin’s ‘Who He Says I Am’ explores the riches of the believer’s identity in union with Christ by faith. Each chapter touches on a different aspect of Christ in us, the hope of glory, and in that context encourages women primarily, and all believers generally, to live out of this reality, just as Jean did throughout her life. May this book lead many to glorify Christ, who ‘deigns to make us one with him’ (Calvin). ”

R. Carlton Wynne

Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
