Introduction

The New Atheism is a cultural movement that is marked by its bold and vitriolic attack on faith and belief in God, with a special emphasis on Christianity. Led by Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens, the new atheists are receiving an enormous amount of publicity and are reaching a global audience. They attack Christianity with zeal and rhetoric, passionately ridiculing and belittling those who believe in God. They cast faith as evil and dangerous, as well as assert that religion is inherently toxic. Their goal is to see religious faith eradicated.

Christians need to respond intelligently to the challenge posed by the New Atheism. Work has been done that demonstrates the flimsiness of the arguments that the new atheists use against theism. In fact, far from demonstrating the incoherence of the Christian worldview, the presuppositions, logic, and arguments of the new atheists actually end up refuting their own position. Christians need to mount an informed defense of the Christian worldview, showing the coherence of the historic, orthodox, evangelical faith. Now is not the time to compromise: now is the time to rise to the challenge posed by the new atheists and defend the Christian worldview in its entirety.

The epistemological shift that took place in the Enlightenment embraced doubting as a means for discovering truth. Consequently, claims for authority and religion were met with skepticism. …
