Introduction

In the 20th Century when Winston Churchill was in power in England, he was so during the time of the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany. He referred to their rise as the “the gathering storm.” Mohler borrows that for his title of this book. The goals for Christians are twofold: 1) to understand the gathering storm that is coming and 2) know how to respond. Consider this important book to learn more.

Summary

Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm over Western Civilization

There is a clear gathering storm over Western civilization as we know it. It is becoming more secular, religion is becoming viewed as non-cognitive and private, and the morals of the culture have become akin to that of the level that paganism has historically displayed. This coming storm in Western civilization has been well-documented by many in recent history. But how should Christians respond?

There are two responses we should avoid: just becoming terrified and becoming politically active, seeking to change the culture by the “right” candidate in office. Although Christians can become involved in politics, that is not the way that Christ has called his disciples to function primarily in this world. Recall the Great Commission; Christ has authority over the earth already. The call is for Christians to stand firm on the gospel, the Scriptures, and uphold their ultimate allegiance to Christ as they prepare for this gathering storm.

Chapter 2: The Gathering Storm in the Church

The gathering storm in the culture has settled over the Church as well. This has happened in two ways: passive and active efforts towards secularism. When the US legalized gay marriage in 2015, this was a form of passive secularism to affect the morals of the Church. The issue that occurs is when the culture endorses something, people in churches of various denominations then have to make a decision about their position on the morality of that given issue. Many churches have given in on this issue despite it clearly being unbiblical.
