A Book Review from Books At a Glance
By Hannah Ahlgren
Crossway’s newest board book series, Big Theology for Little Hearts, is a vital tool in the toolbox of all parents with young kids. Those desiring to lay a foundation for biblical truth and start discussions about spiritual subjects will find these books invaluable in this mission. They have been a blessing to our children as we begin exposing them daily to the eternal truths of our great God.
The writer of this series, Devon Provencher, is a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his talented wife Jessica is the illustrator for this series. Provencher uses concise but deep definitions for key aspects of biblical truth for the youngest of readers. The Provencher’s created these for their children and other children ages 1-4. The beautiful artwork fits perfectly with the stories and drives the points into the heart using the short section of text contained on each page. My 4-year-old son was especially helped by the pictures, drawing him to ask even more questions. He especially was interested in the atonement page which has an artful drawing of the hand of Jesus on the cross with a nail in it. Even our 1-year-old engaged with the stories because of their simplicity and brevity.
The book titled “God” goes through the attributes of God giving clear, easy to understand definitions for his character in the way children can understand. The book titled “Jesus” goes through who Jesus is and what he has done for sinful man. The book titled “The Gospel” goes through the creation, fall, redemption and consummation. This book is especially good for starting a conversation with young children about their great need for a Savior.
I love these books and their inspiration for further conversations with my children about God, Jesus and the gospel. These books are a definite must-have for your library and your churches’ library.
