A Brief Book Notice from Books At a Glance

by Fred G. Zaspel

I first read this many years ago and found it to be one of the most stirring, enjoyable accounts of the life of Christ I had ever read. My opinion has not changed over the years. I recently picked it up and scanned my way through yet again. It’s filled with the insights of a New Testament scholar and charged with the interest of a devoted follower.

France aims not merely to retell the life of Jesus but to demonstrate why Jesus provoked such intense reactions—why some abandoned everything to follow Him while others determined to kill Him. He demonstrates vividly the historical Jesus was far more unsettling and far more fascinating than either his ancient opponents or many modern admirers are willing to admit. Jesus was “radical” because He claimed God’s authority, inaugurated God’s kingdom, and demanded a response that must not be postponed.

What a treat to read and learn of our Lord Jesus. What an amazing man. What a savior!

Small size paperback; it’s an easy read. I have assigned this for reading in college level courses, but it is as accessible to any general reader, high school and up. Perhaps the “best first” book on the subject to give someone.

Highly recommended. I love it!
