Having recently preached through the prophecies of Daniel I had occasion to read Hamilton’s excellent NSBT volume more carefully, and I found his approach refreshingly helpful. His goal is to examine Daniel’s place in Scripture’s redemptive-historical storyline and demonstrate both its own contribution and its rich connections to previous and later biblical revelation. Strong links to Deuteronomy and Revelation are especially explored plainly and persuasively, along with connections to the Prophets and elsewhere. His unpacking of prominent themes such as Daniel’s “fourth kingdom,” the “Little Horn,” tribulation, and the future kingdom of God are consistently rooted in solid exegesis and, thus, happily illumine Daniel and related biblical passages.
This side of the parousia no writer on eschatology will find universal agreement with all the details, and I found myself at a few places wishing he had taken a different turn. Still, I found this book a most helpful read, and I am certain all other students of Daniel will also. Highly and enthusiastically recommended.
